Monero (XMR) is an open-source cryptocurrency with a focus on privacy and decentralisation. It uses ring signatures, stealth addresses, and Ring Confidential Transactions (RingCT) to obscure the sender, recipient, and amount of every transaction.

Privacy properties

Three protocol-level features distinguish Monero from the Bitcoin family:

The combined effect is that Monero\'s transaction graph cannot be clustered by the techniques that work on Bitcoin. Commercial blockchain analytics firms have stated publicly that Monero is, in the strict sense, not traceable using their standard toolkits.

Use on darknet markets

The shift toward Monero settlement on Tor-based marketplaces accelerated through 2023–2025. Markets such as Nexus Market default new accounts to XMR and route Bitcoin support exclusively to legacy migration. The economic case is straightforward: Bitcoin transaction graphs persist indefinitely, while Monero\'s privacy guarantees apply at the protocol level and survive the eventual deanonymisation of any single transaction.
